# Cargo / crate statistics on nixpkgs of 2300 rust projects

i've been doing a study on the rust/cargo and therefore crate usage of 2300 rust projects in nixpkgs you might want to look at:

Interesting to see `cfg-if` that high in the list. It is a macro that doesn't need to change, specially because its functionality is now in std with `cfg_select! {}`, so the crate has no need to be updated, not it ever needed many features, which means that it is a prime candidate for being shared easily, but at the same time we should expect the crate to stop being used as the ecosystem raises their MSRV.

`cfg_select!` is new in 1.95. The crates I see using `cfg-if` in the lockfiles I have around include:

- `backtrace`
- `getrandom`
- `sha2`
- `log`
- `tempfile`
- `ring`
- `parking_lot_core`
- `md-5`
- `sha1`

I don't think we're close to these having an MSRV ≥ 1.95 any time soon. While its days are (hopefully) numbered, I expect it to have a long tail of stragglers.
