Are there publishing rules on crates.io?

So this has nothing to do with a policy against obscenity. Why did you frame your question that way?

Please understand the difference between active and passive moderation: just because there is not a large enough team to actively look for and catch issues does not mean that issues when reported do not get handled. They do.

The team tries to keep the number of rules they need to enforce low, but they do enforce things.

As far as the rules, they're here. In particular:

  • Violating trademark can get a crate removed
  • Violating the code of conduct can get a crate removed

The page explicitly states the following:

“Does this violate the Code of Conduct” is a contextual question that cannot be directly answered in the hypothetical sense. All of the details must be taken into consideration in these kinds of situations.

So talking about the hypothetical when it comes to the second point isn't useful. As others have mentioned, there are definitely valid reasons to have crate names that seem like they clash with the "overly sexual names" bit in the code of conduct, and they seem to be allowed.

If you want to know if a specific crate name is okay, email them with a question.
